JNPT handles 55 to 60 per cent of the total
containerised import export cargo of India, which for the
year 2004 - 2005 worked out to over 2.5 million teus. This
figure is projected to grow considerably in the coming years.
|
|
JNPT operated two container terminals and
one bulk terminal but due to the exponential growth of containerised
cargo the port trust decided to redevelop the bulk terminal
into a container terminal. Previously the bulk terminal
consisted of two mechanised berths of 500 meters & 212 meters
of quay length designed for handling dry bulk cargo in vessels
up to 70,000 DWT.
|
|
The consortium of A.P.Moller-Maersk A/S Group and CONCOR won the competitive bid for the terminal and a joint
venture company Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd was incorporated
by the consortium to build and operate the container terminal
for a period of 30 years on BOT.
|
On 10th August 2004, GTI signed a License Agreement with for this redevelopment.
|
|
This container terminal is expected
to add 1.3 million TEU throughput capacity, augmenting the
existing capacity of Nhava Sheva International Container
Terminal (NSICT).
