JNPT handles 55 to 60 per cent of the total containerised import export cargo of India, which for the year 2004 - 2005 worked out to over 2.5 million teus. This figure is projected to grow considerably in the coming years.

JNPT operated two container terminals and one bulk terminal but due to the exponential growth of containerised cargo the port trust decided to redevelop the bulk terminal into a container terminal. Previously the bulk terminal consisted of two mechanised berths of 500 meters & 212 meters of quay length designed for handling dry bulk cargo in vessels up to 70,000 DWT.

The consortium of A.P.Moller-Maersk A/S Group and CONCOR won the competitive bid for the terminal and a joint venture company Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd was incorporated by the consortium to build and operate the container terminal for a period of 30 years on BOT.

On 10th August 2004, GTI signed a License Agreement with for this redevelopment.

This container terminal is expected to add 1.3 million TEU throughput capacity, augmenting the existing capacity of Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT).
